Level 3

The CMBGA utilizes three levels to delineate the competencies and responsibilities of certified commercial snowmobile and snowbike guides. The highest level of certification is the Level 3, Lead Guide designation.

LEVEL 3–LEAD GUIDE

Lead Guides often fill the role of Operations Manager, Controller or supervisor. Lead guides are to be competent in all aspects of mountain travel. They must be able to create contingency plans for the group through effective navigation and skilled route selection. They must exhibit exemplary group management skills with a focus on safety and client satisfaction.

COMPETENCIES 

Safety 

  • The prime objective of the lead guide is the safety of clients and staff. 
  • Ensure Occupational Health and Safety program is in place. 
  • Update emergency procedures and rescue equipment as necessary.
  • Monitor responsibilities delegated to other staff.
  • Ensure equipment is in working condition.
  • Ensure radio check ins are kept and on schedule.
  • Oversee avalanche safety and weather observations.
  • If applicable, update and administer an Avalanche Safety Plan.
  • Ensure daily reports are completed.
  • Act as an open and direct line of communication for any safety concerns that may arise.
  • Facilitate guide meetings and dissemination of information.
  • Ensure all procedures are followed correctly.
  • Organize inhouse training sessions.

 

Decision Making

  • Must have adequate understanding of all aspects of the operation and the ability to make effective decisions.
  • Oversees or makes all key decisions during an emergency, depending on the experience level of other guides.
  • Can operate safely in challenging and complex terrain without supervision.

 

Supervisory Authority

  • Must be able to appropriately delegate responsibility.
  • Co-ordinates daily responsibilities of the guiding team.
  • Supervises level 1 and 2 guides.

 

Qualification

  • Current Advanced First Aid such as an 80hr Advanced Wilderness First Aid or WCB Level 3 or Non-Urban Outdoor Emergency Care 3
  • Current CPR
  • A minimum of a CAA Level 2 Avalanche Operations certification
  • Riding Skills
  • Must be proficient in all aspects of motorized mountain travel,
  • Must be competent in all snow conditions.
